Managing Director, Head of Construction
Sean is the Head of Construction at Black Rhino. He was previously at Murray and Roberts Group until January 2010. He spent 20 years there where he served as a member of the Murray & Roberts Group Executive Committee from 2001 and as one of four Executive Directors on the main board of JSE-listed Murray & Roberts Holdings from 2004. This select leadership team was responsible for designing and implementing the Group’s strategy, which saw Murray & Roberts establish itself as South Africa’s leading engineering, construction and construction services company, with significant operations in the Middle East, Australia and North America.
Sean is recognized throughout the construction industry for his strong and definitive leadership skills, his exceptional negotiating skills and his ability to spot and develop talent. He has 30 years of industry-specific experience derived from the setting of Group companies’ strategies, arranging and leading mergers and acquisitions, trouble shooting in problem businesses and on underperforming projects, and taking full executive responsibility for a large portfolio of businesses and major projects. During his career at Murray & Roberts, Sean had Group executive responsibility for Murray & Roberts Cementation and RUC Mining Contractors (Australia), collectively the largest underground mining contracting business in the world. Sean was instrumental in the acquisition process of Cementation and was personally responsible for its successful business transformation and integration with RUC Mining Contractors. This was achieved without the loss of any senior executives. He set the strategy for this business and put the team in place for a business which doubled its turnover to over R3 billion in three years, employing over 14 000 people.
Sean, also served as Executive Chairman of Murray & Roberts Construction, a R3 billion business employing over 3 500 people. His key activities were to set the company strategy and begin implementing the business transformation process of the company, which had undergone significant merger and acquisition activity in the previous five years. His understanding of the complexity of this specific industry led to him being charged in 2005 with full executive responsibility for the Group’s 2010 major project aspirations, including the Gautrain Rapid Rail and the Soccer World Cup Greenpoint Stadium projects.
Sean was also Chairman of the Bombela Civil Joint Venture, the contractor responsible for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link – a public/private partnership enterprise. Sean had full Group executive responsibility for the design and construction of the R25 billion civil component of that project, employing more than 7 000 people. At the time this was the largest rail project in the world and remains the largest ever infrastructure project undertaken in South Africa. He also had executive responsibility for securing and delivering the construction of the R4.5 billion Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, another of the Groups critical 2010 business commitments. His executive responsibilities included the R7.5 billion Medupi Power Station civil contract, the R10 billion Medupi Power Station boiler mechanical contract and the R10 billion Kusile Power Station boiler mechanical contract, Eskom’s capital expansion programme at Medupi and Kusile. He also served on the Group Risk Committee and HSE Committees.
From June 2013 to September 2014, Sean consulted full time to Eskom (the South African parastatal Company that generates, transmits and distributes 95% of all electricity in South Africa and 45% of all electricity in Africa) on the Medupi Power Station project.
The Medupi Project is a coal-fired power plant in the Limpopo province of South Africa, comprising of 6 units with a total capacity of 4764MW. The plant has a supercritical design that operates with greater efficiency than previous South African boilers and will be the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world. The capital cost of the project is estimated at R105billion.
Sean has had significant broad range executive experience with a deep understanding of the corporate governance environment .
